Former Jewish hospital, Ulica Stawki 6/8
![]() |
This building, 6/8 Stawki Street, was formerly a hospital. During the Second World War it bordered onto the Umschlagplatz and was used by the Germans to hold deportees prior to their being sent to their deaths at Treblinka extermination camp. Ghastly scenes occurred here. A good impression of what this building was like during the Great Deportation is given by John Hersey in his novel The Wall (Alfred A. Knopf, 1950).
On the south side of Stawki Street, behind the photographer, another surviving building was the SS local headquarters for the Umschlagplatz. Both buildings now look very similar, and may differ significantly from the way they appeared in 1940-1943. Both now appear to be used by university departments.
The Umschlagplatz memorial can just be seen to the left of the buildings.
